Who is responsible to combat climate change?

“Only One Earth” is theme of this year World Environment Day.

Who actually is responsible for saving our planet? Governments? Corporations? NGOs? Society? Or the environment will take care of itself and renew itself?

All of us. We have to act, and we have to act today.

🏛 Governments

  • energy transformation, transition to cleaner sources
  • develop CO2 capture systems
  • legislation, taxes on pollution, limits, tariffs on products imported from afar, tax reliefs on local products
  • legal solutions that force the industry to change
  • reporting obligation
  • development of collective transport

💰 Financial services sector

  • support low-carbon solutions
  • consider organisation’s environmental impact when calculating insurance premiums and for other financial services

🏭 Organisations

  • reduce the use of harmful fertilizers in food production
  • reduce the amount of energy and water used
  • introduce environmentally conscious design (eco-design)
  • introduce circular economy principles
  • transfer of environmental requirements down the supply chain
  • shorten the product supply chains, optimize transport
  • enable remote work
  • implement iso14001

👲🏼 Individuals

  • look at environmental practices of corporations, consumer pressure leads to changes in corporate behaviour
  • resign from brands that do not take action to reduce emissions or are not transparent
  • limit consumption, change habits, buy local, balance diet, reduce consumption of meat and fish
  • educate yourself (and others) about the climate
  • support pro-climate policy and candidates
  • take care of equipment and energy efficiency of the house, heating, insulation
  • choose public transport or bicycle

🎓 Universities & schools

  • finance research on environment
  • shape pro-ecological attitudes
  • provide high-quality environmental education

Social changes are highly needed because they influence the market and build public support for difficult changes. We are all responsible. There is no “them”, there is only “us”.
